PDQ-FYI

Let's Bring Recess Back
By Ramon E. Torres

Remember how you felt as the clock tickedtoward recess? There was enthusiasm, excitement and an eager anticipation byyou and your school friends. If you werelike me, recess was the highlight of the day.I looked forward to it because there was asense of freedom; of unbounded joy in just"being." I loved playing with my friends andjust having fun.

Why can't we, as working adults, have that same sense of childhood abandon? Why can't we eagerly look forward to the work day; to the challenges and the enjoyment of working with our co-workers? Well, I think it just might be possible.

In the world of work, stress is a given. And the more stressed we become, the more we lose our sense of humor. According to Howard Papush (AKA "Dr. Play") studies show that children laugh 200 times a day, while adults laugh only 7 times. The irony of this is that humor inspires imaginative, spontaneous thinking and creativity.

At PDQ we are always trying to stay ahead of what's new what will be tomorrow's trends with an eye toward serving our customers better. At our annual meeting this year, we participated in a very unique, and I believe, cutting-edge seminar that could bring humor back to your corporation or department. Our imaginative skills were tested when we gathered for a session with Howard Papush, Dr. Play and his seminar entitled, "Let's Play Again."

A former broadcasting executive, Dr. Play's sessions are guaranteed to make everyone have a great time. His seminar motivates, creates a more trusting staff environment, and helps you reduce stress on the job and in your personal life. Imagine your staff laughing: playing a game of fruit basket or car/car? It is positively amazing how a simple, childlike exercise can improve your company and your staff.

Even at PDQ we have been looking for techniques to reduce stress. After a session with Dr. Play, we learned how to be kids again. He taught us that it's okay to have fun at work. Most importantly, we learned to connect with one another. We have remembered to relax, to be a harmonious productive team and to trust our fellow employees.

What is the prescription? Reflect on the enthusiasm and excitement of spending recess time with your school chum; take this wonderful feeling and share it with your team members. With the support of Dr. Play's seminar, let's play again!
